In an effort to combat obesity rates in the Bronx, the Montefiore School Health Program took it upon itself to begin the fight with a campaign to promote 1% non-sweetened milk in schools. The change to serve only 1% non-sweetened milk resulted in a reduction of 4.6 billion calories and 422 million grams of fat consumed per year by NYC school children. That equates to a reduction of 5,960 calories and 619 grams of fat per student (25% reduction in calories and 81% reduction in grams of fat from milk). Milk consumption rose over the study period by 1.3%.
The class has 15 more students than pragmatic source in past years, the result of budget cuts last spring and an increase in enrollment this school year
